Abov: Elevate Your Whiskey with a Beer

At Abov it’s no secret that whiskey is our go-to beverage of choice, but that doesn’t mean we have to forgo others. We liked beer, we still like beer, and today we’re going to celebrate International Beer Day by looking at all the wonderful ways beer and whiskey go together.

Not exactly a vintage ad, but feels completely appropriate to celebrate International Beer Day

Straight with a Chaser

Whether you know it as a “Hauf’n’Hauf”, “Citywide”, or “Boilermaker”; beer and whiskey were meant to go together. Esquire has us covered with a list of their four favorite whiskies to chase with four different types of beer. This list was our favorite because the whiskies are easy enough to acquire and the types of beer are generic.

Grab Our Box

We’re on a mission to help you find your next favorite whiskey. So for those who love bourbon but haven’t tried much else or others who think the only good whiskies are those spelled without an “e”, we’d like to introduce The Whiskey Essentials Box.

Branch out with 6 samples of 5 of the most popular whiskey (and whisky) styles out there including bourbon, rye, Irish Whiskey, and two kinds of scotch. We even threw in a premium pot still bourbon so you can see if you’re into the finer things. Also included is a whiskey flavor wheel and some information on how you can get the most out of your box using the Abov Whiskey App. Grab one for you or as a gift to start a new whiskey adventure

A Perfect Pair

For those looking to go beyond simply dropping a shot into a beer or taking the one-two punch to the face; the Scotch Malt Whisky Society offers a more refined recommendation. Specific whiskies to pair with a number of different beer styles.

You’ll have to get your hands on some unique bottlings to make these pairings happen, but if you were looking for an excuse to add some more whiskies to your cabinet (and who isn’t?) you’ve got one now!

Buffalo Trace Bourbon, the iconic American spirit that stands the test of time. With its inviting aroma of caramel, vanilla, and gentle oak, it welcomes you into a world of smooth and flavorful sipping. The taste unfolds with notes of toffee, spices, and a touch of honey, leaving a warm and satisfying finish. Versatile and timeless, Buffalo Trace is a classic choice for both seasoned whiskey enthusiasts and those exploring the world of bourbon for the first time.

Cosmo  – Ondjaba The Namibian Whiskey – 80/100

“What a great suprise: a great whisky from Namibia with barley malted over elephant dung fire, nice and full and sweet with a load of sweet wine and gentle peat”

All Points West Mid-Atlantic Pot Still Rye Whiskey
As an app user, you may have noticed an uptick in the amount you’re hearing about All Points West Distillery. Why the focus? Well for two reasons: first, when we find an interesting distillery that offers unique products, we feel obligated to share it with you all. And second, because helping small distilleries grow means more whiskey choices for all of us!
My personal favorite from their whiskey lineup was their Mid-Atlantic Rye. Styled after post-prohibition rye whiskies distilled in, you guessed it, the Mid-Atlantic region here in the states, it’s a rich and spicy rye with an unctuousness you can only get through the pot still distillation process.
This one is even better with a little water to open up the bouquet and really let the rye flavor shine through. When I visited APW this one really stood out from the crowd. So much so, that I had to get a bottle for my own cabinet!
RATING: 79/100

Yamazaki 12 Year Old, the Japanese wonder that’s like a harmonious orchestra playing on your taste buds. It’s the perfect symphony of fruity sweetness, delicate spices, and a smoothness that’ll make you wonder why it’s not on repeat. Sip it like a maestro, and let the encore last forever.

One of the best ways to not only help the community grow, but also to improve the app itself is to leave a rating and a review on the App or Play store. Whether your happy with it or not, we’d love to hear from you and learn what you love or what we can do to make it better!
