June 2023 – Issue #9

Abov: Elevate Your Dad's Whiskey

Happy Father’s Day (to those who celebrate in June)! In this month’s edition we’ll help you find the perfect gift for the father figure in your life; share a new whisky from prolific child-haver Rod Stewart; and look for the results from the granddaddy of all spirits competitions. It’s the news and notes from around the world of Whiskey for June!

In honor of Father's Day, here's a delightful 1937 ad for Old Grand-Dad whiskey; one you can still find today! (typically on the bottom shelf)

Elevate Your Dad's Whiskey

Gift giving is never easy, especially for dads who never seem to want anything. Well that’s where we can help out, because who wouldn’t want a great bottle of whiskey! Check out our list of the top 10 bottles for dad and you can even buy a bottle from one of our partners. If you hurry it’ll get to him just in time for you to be the favorite child this year.

Maggie May I Have a Bottle

No that’s not another vintage whiskey ad, it really is Rod Stewart holding a bottle of his brand new Wolfie’s Whiskey. Rod describes the bottle as “a rascal of a thing”, but we’d be interested to see how the distillers at Loch Lomond managed to get Rod in the time machine to “take him back to the good ol’ days”.

The Waiting is the Hardest Part

All eyes are on San Francisco every June for the results of the world spirits competition. While the official “best in show” results won’t be shared until their mid-month gala, we know which whiskeys won medals and, perhaps surprisingly, the leading medal-getter was “good friend of Rod Stewart” Loch Lomond. We’re starting to feel like we should get our hands on some of that time traveling whiskey they’re making up there..

Monkey Shoulder

Monkey Shoulder is a blended Scotch whiskey that is made from a combination of three different single malts. According to Master of Malt, this blend is sourced from Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie, all from Speyside.

It has a smooth and mellow flavor profile, with notes of vanilla, honey, and spices. Monkey Shoulder is a versatile whiskey that can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail.

rburns1 – Redbreast 27 Year Old – 93/100

“Fruit-forward; plums; black cherries; summer berries; vanilla; baking spices; cinnamon.  Medium viscosity, oily mouth feel, very rich even though it is cask strength.  My favorite Irish whiskey – except for the price…”

Yellowstone Select Bourbon Whiskey
This month I’m drinking Yellowstone Select Bourbon, from Limestone Branch Distillery Co. In the past few months I have seen the distribution of Yellowstone grow to more bars and restaurants near me and assumed it may be a fad related to a certain TV show that shares the name.
On a recent trip to St. Louis, it was available in the airport next to the old standbys of Maker’s Mark and Jack Daniel’s, so I decided to try it. Wow. It was filled with a delicious sweetness and two of my favorite notes for bourbon: caramel and vanilla.
The lower proof AND reasonable price point make it one of my go-to’s for easy drinking bourbons during these hot summer months.
RATING: 80/100

Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch

Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch, a bourbon that’s as bold as its namesake. Sip it and feel the spirit of Colonel Taylor himself course through your veins, with flavors that command your respect and a finish that leaves you standing at attention. It’s a small batch with a big personality, perfect for those who like their whiskey with a side of history and a dash of swagger.

At Abov we’re all about expanding horizons and making all types of whiskey more approachable. To that end, we’re working on creating an “Whiskey Essentials Box” that contains samples of five unique styles of whiskey: sweet scotch, peaty scotch, bourbon, rye, and Irish whiskey, plus a premium whisk(e)y. If you’d be interested in getting more information about this upcoming offering, click the sign-up below.
